Fellowships and Formal Training Programs

Fellowships provide structured, paid, post-graduate training that combines professional experience with mentorship and cohort learning. Many are highly competitive, so start exploring early.

Healthcare Administrative Fellowships

Healthcare administrative fellowships are competitive, paid, post-graduate programs, typically 12 to 18 months, that develop early-career leaders in health system management. They are an excellent pathway for M.P.H. graduates interested in health administration, operations, strategy, and policy. Most require an M.H.A., M.P.H., M.B.A., or related master's degree.

Applications are typically submitted through NAFCAS (the National Administrative Fellowship Centralized Application System) or directly through the host organization. Note: many programs have moved away from NAFCAS for 2026-2027. Verify application portals and deadlines directly with each program, since timelines shift year to year.

  • DFW and Texas Programs

Start here. OSPH's Dallas location gives you a meaningful geographic advantage for these programs.

  • National Programs

The following programs are among the most recognized administrative fellowships nationally and actively accept M.P.H. graduates. Many are highly competitive, with acceptance rates under 5%.

    • Mayo Clinic Administrative Fellowship – Locations in Arizona, Florida, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Applications open June 8, 2026; deadline Aug. 26, 2026, for the 2027-2029 cohort. About eight offers per year across all sites. Preference for CAHME-accredited programs.
    • Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Administrative Fellowship – Applications open July 6, 2026; deadline Sept. 14, 2026. First-round interviews Sept. 27-28, 2026. Apply directly, not through NAFCAS. Part of the Mass General Brigham health system.
    • Yale New Haven Health System Administrative Fellowship – Up to two fellows selected annually. An M.H.A., M.P.H., or related degree earned within five years is required. Apply directly, not through NAFCAS.
    • Tufts Medicine Administrative Fellowship – A 13-month program (July 2026 to July 2027) with competitive salary and benefits. M.P.H. graduates are well represented among alumni.
    • Intermountain Health Administrative Fellowship – Utah-based, with multiple facilities across the Mountain West. An M.P.H., M.H.A., or M.B.A. with a healthcare emphasis is accepted. Graduates from December 2025 to June 2026 are eligible for the current cycle.
    • CalOptima Health Administrative Fellowship – A California Medi-Cal health plan. A 12-month paid program starting July 2026. An excellent fit for M.P.H. graduates interested in managed care, health equity, and payer organizations. Applications for the 2027-2028 cycle open in fall 2026.
    • MultiCare Health System Administrative Fellowship – Pacific Northwest. Up to four fellows annually, starting in June. The 2026-2027 cycle is currently closed; check back in spring 2026 for the 2027-2028 cycle.
    • Lee Health Administrative Fellowship – Southwest Florida. An M.P.H., M.H.A., or M.B.A. is accepted, and the fellowship begins in August. A strong community health system focus.

Find More Programs: NCAF and NAFCAS

The National Council on Administrative Fellowships (NCAF) coordinates the national administrative fellowship recruitment cycle. Its centralized application system, NAFCAS, lists dozens of programs in one place, though many top programs (including MGH and Yale New Haven) now use direct applications. Check both NAFCAS and individual program websites. Learn more about NCAF and NAFCAS.

Administrative Fellowship Application Tips

  • Start in the spring of your final year. Most applications open in June through August and close in August through September.
  • OSPH's Dallas location is a real asset: UT Southwestern, Children's Health, JPS, and Memorial Hermann are all within reach for rotations.
  • Tailor your personal statement to each program. Generic statements are easy to spot.
  • Your Applied Practice Experience (APE) deliverables are portfolio evidence of real-world project management. Reference them specifically.
  • Connect with OSPH alumni in administrative roles through LinkedIn. An informational interview before applying makes a difference.
  • Many programs require work experience in healthcare. Your APE, internships, and coursework all count.

Job Search Tips

A strategic job search takes longer than most students expect. Start three to six months before your target start date, especially for fellowship programs and federal positions.

  • Use the right keywords

Many public health roles are not titled 'public health.' Search by function: 'epidemiologist,' 'data analyst,' 'program evaluator,' 'health educator,' 'quality improvement,' 'population health,' 'clinical informatics,' 'policy analyst,' and 'community health.' Combine these with sector terms such as 'government,' 'nonprofit,' 'hospital,' and 'consulting.'

  • Tailor every application

Mirror language from the job posting in your resume and cover letter. Applicant tracking systems (ATS) filter resumes before a human sees them, so a tailored application significantly improves your chances.

  • Conduct informational interviews

Reach out to OSPH alumni and professionals in roles you are interested in. A 20-minute conversation is often more valuable than hours of online research. Use LinkedIn to identify alumni working in target organizations.

  • Set up job alerts

Create saved searches with email alerts on USAJOBS, LinkedIn, Indeed, and the Emory PHEC board. Many positions close quickly, so alerts help you apply early.

  • Start federal applications early

Federal job applications on USAJOBS are lengthy and require detailed work history. Build your USAJOBS profile before you start actively applying. Federal hiring timelines are long, so apply three to six months before your target start date.

  • Leverage your APE and coursework

Your Applied Practice Experience (APE) is real work experience. Frame it as a professional role on your resume. Your deliverables, competency reports, and poster are portfolio items.
